SUMMARY:PhD defense: Synergizing Data Management\, DataOps\, and Data Pipelines for AI Enhanced Embedded Systems
DESCRIPTION:Candidate:\n\nAiswarya Raj Munappy\n\nOpponent:\n\nTenured associate professor Xiaofeng Wang\, University of Bolzano\, Italy\n\nCommittee: \n\nProfessor Maria Paasivaara\, LUT University Finland\nProfessor Daniel Varro\, Linköping University\nProfessor Stefan Wagner\, Technical University Munich\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nAbstract:\nContext: Data management is a critical aspect of any artificial intelligence (AI) initiative\, playing a pivotal role in the development\, training\, and deployment of AI models. A well-structured approach to data management ensures that AI models are trained on reliable data\, comply with ethical standards\, and contribute positively to decision-making processes in embedded systems. \nObjectives: This thesis is structured around three primary objectives. The first objective is to comprehensively understand and address the data management challenges associated with embedded systems. Building upon this understanding\, the second objective is to explore the data management practices that can help alleviate the data management challenges. Finally\, the third objective aims to develop and validate the implementation approaches for enhanced data management. \nMethod: To achieve the objectives\, we conducted research in close collaboration with industry and used a combination of different empirical research methods like interpretive case studies\, literature reviews\, and action research. \nResults: This thesis presents six main results. First\, it identifies and categorizes data management challenges\, solutions\, and limitations. Second\, it presents a stairway model delineating the stages of the evolution towards DataOps. Third\, it proposes a model for evaluating the maturity of data pipelines and identifies determinants to assess the impact of machine learning (ML) on data pipelines. Fourth\, it identifies the differences between unidirectional and bidirectional data pipelines and the significance\, benefits\, and challenges of bidirectional data pipelines. The thesis also provides a roadmap for the smooth migration from unidirectional to bidirectional data pipelines. Fifth\, it presents and validates the conceptual model of an end-to-end data pipeline for ML/DL models. It also discusses how to balance the need for robustness with the complexity of the pipeline. Finally\, it presents and validates fault-tolerant data pipelines and an AI-powered 4-stage model for automated fault recovery in data pipelines. \nConclusion: In essence\, this research contributes insights and practical guidance for addressing data management challenges in AI-enhanced embedded systems. The identified challenges\, solutions\, and proposed models pave the way for future research and industry practices\, aiming to streamline data operations\, enhance the reliability of DL models\, and promote efficient data management in evolving technological landscapes of AI-enhanced embedded systems. \n  \nHotels\nAs a participant in the defense and in the Digital Product Management Week you have a discount for the hotels in the list below: \n\nGothia Towers\, Standard room: 1590kr\, use the this link for the conference discount\nRadisson Blu Riverside Hotel:- 15% Code to be used: Corporate account id\, 57072\nComfort Hotel Göteborg: 15%: Code to be used: Chalmers Logi\nClarion Hotel Pier: 15%: Code to be used: Chalmers Logi\nRiverton:  -15%: Code to be used: DPMWEEK

SUMMARY:Summer School on Digital Product Management
DESCRIPTION:The summer school on Digital Product Management provides an excellent opportunity for doctoral students and other participants to explore the fundamentals of digital product management and apply product management techniques to a product idea. \nThe central concept that the school is focusing on is how to create a product out of the research results. This involves creating a business model for your idea\, understanding its impact on the intangible economy and its distruptive power. Next\, we focus on identifying the core of the value proposition\, the main requirements and features for your product and how to deliver these features to the potential customers. We put special attention on the customer journey and retention and building sustainable customer relationships. Finally\, we explore the strategies for joining or creating a software ecosystem around your product idea and unlocking the potential of externalities. \nThe summer school will contain lectures\, workshops\, and hands-on activities. \nProgram in brief: \n\n\nMonday – Kick-off meeting  and selection the product idea (about technology transfer between academia and industry) \n\n\nTuesday – Product Strategy\, Product Vision\, and Product Definition – Building the Business Model and Generating the Hypotheses \n\n\nWednesday – Product planning\, Customer Insight\, and Product Requirements Engineering\, Testing the Hypotheses and discovering eliciting requirements \n\n\nThursday – Ecosystem\, Product Sourcing Strategies\, Asset Management and Sourcing  – realizing the idea and planning sustainable growth. Final presentation.

SUMMARY:Cross-company workshop (Malmö/Lund): Time to let go of agile – what is next?
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is part of our combined research activities in Software Center projects 5 and 9 and can be seen as a merge between digital transformation and the many new opportunities that new technologies bring (such as new ways-of-working both internally and within your ecosystem) and the ways in which teams and organizations develop\, measure and continuously improve customer value (by an increasing use of data from products and customers). \nIn a recent blog\, Jan describes how he notices more and more resistance against agile methods and based on this\, he predicts that this resistance will reach a tipping point. With the agile manifesto published in 2001 and hence more than 20 years old\, it is time for us to move on to the next paradigm. What this new paradigm could (or should) look like is something that we hope to discuss with you in this upcoming workshop. You find the blog post in which the topic was presented here: \nhttps://janbosch.com/blog/index.php/2024/01/02/2024-10-predictions/ \nThe workshop will be of an exploratory nature where we together discuss (1) the current challenges and shortcomings of agile practices\, (2) what would be the key principles of agile principles worth keeping\, and (3) what the elements of a new paradigm could/should look like. \nPlease note that this workshop will be run in two locations: \n\nThe first workshop will be organized in Gothenburg on February 28th\, between 09:00 – 12:00 (on-site at Lindholmen in Gothenburg). The invite for this workshop was sent earlier today and we hope you all got it.\nThe second workshop\, on the same topic and the one for which we invite you here\, will be organized in the Malmö/Lund region on March 19th\, 13:00 – 16:00 (again an on-site event and the location will be announced soon).\n\nWe hope that this format offers the opportunity for as many of you as possible to join us! \nMost welcome! \n

\nPlease note that this workshop will be run in two locations: \n\nThe first workshop is the one we invite for here\, February 28th\, between 09:00 – 12:00 at Lindholmen (Jupiter building\, 5th floor\, room 520) in Gothenburg (it is an on-site event only). \nThe second workshop (same topic) will be organized in the Malmö/Lund region on March 19th\, 13:00 – 16:00 (again an on-site event).\n\nWe hope that this format offers the opportunity for as many of you as possible to join us! \nFor the first workshop in Gothenburg\, we plan a morning session (09:00 – 12:00) and a joint lunch for those of you who would be interested (on your own expenses). \nMost welcome! \n

Alexander’s research goal is to facilitate evolution of software by taking into account social aspects of software development. His work tends to involve theories and methods both from within computer science (e.g.\, theory of socio-technical coordination; methods from natural language processing\, machine learning) and from outside of computer science (e.g.\, organisational psychology). The underlying idea of his work is that of empiricism\, i.e.\, that addressing software engineering challenges should be grounded in observation and experimentation\, and requires a combination of the social and the technical perspectives. Alexander has co-authored a book “Evolving Software Systems” (Springer Verlag\, 2014)\, and more than 100 scientific papers and articles. He is actively involved in organisation of scientific conferences as member and chair of steering committees\, general chair\, program committee chair\, track chair and program committee member. He has won multiple best paper and distinguished reviewer awards\, and is member of the editorial board of several journals. Alexander is a senior member of IEEE and a member of ACM. \n * Birds-of-a-feather session:\nAn informal discussion group\, typically at a conference\, based on a shared interest and without any fixed agenda.

SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar: Refinery: Automated Generation of Consistent and Diverse Domain-specific Graph Models
DESCRIPTION:Title: \nRefinery: Automated Generation of Consistent and Diverse Domain-specific Graph Models \nSpeaker: Professor Daniel Varro\, Linköping university \nAbstract: \nWhen engineering complex software systems\, knowledge representations often take the form of domain-specific graph models. For instance\, the system architecture in automotive or avionics applications are captured by standardized models. Moreover\, tool qualification as necessitated by safety standards require a large and diverse set of consistent graphs as test cases or design candidates tailored to the application domain. Furthermore\, system-level testing of autonomous vehicles may also rely on synthetic test contexts and abstract test scenarios captured as graphs. In this talk\, I present the conceptual foundations and a short demo of the open-source Refinery framework\, which can automatically derive a diverse set of consistent domain-specific graph models from a high-level domain specification and consistency constraints. As shown by extensive experimental evaluation\, Refinery can generate significantly larger and more diverse graphs than state-of-the-art solver-based model generators.
