SUMMARY:Value design workshop at Reporting workshop
DESCRIPTION:Value design is concerned with helping companies and teams clarify and agree on what they optimize for. It is a technique for identifying\, prioritizing and aligning metrics at the feature\, system and business level. \nWith A/B testing and feature experimentation becoming critical for continuous improvement of products and services\, companies need techniques that support continuous development and delivery of customer value. \nValue design is a step-by-step technique that help roles and functions at different levels align and that ensure that R&D efforts and resources effectively contribute to overall business goals and visions. \nIn this workshop\, we engage in interactive work and discussions where the participants form groups in which they model the value of a concrete feature. This can be done by forming groups from the same company or forming groups including participants from different companies. The groups are free to select a feature from their own company context or they can use one of three that we offer as fictive cases. However\, the goal is to quantitatively model the factors\, and their relative priority\, that constitute the value of functionality to the customer. \n  \nThe case examples are listed below: \n(1) Online game\nIn online game development\, typical value factors are e.g.\, revenue\, new users\, recurrent users etc. In addition\, companies monitor product performance using metrics such as loading time\, response time\, number of current users as well as user-centered metrics that capture user (gamer) activity and behavior. In this workshop\, we look to model the value of a successful online game from a business\, system performance and/or user perspective with the intent of defining the overall evaluation criteria that can be used in A/B testing. \n(2) Adaptive cruise control\nAdaptive cruise control is a well-known feature that most of us have experience of. In this workshop\, we look to model the value of a successful adaptive cruise control. What are the most important value factors an automotive company should optimize for and continuously improve? In this case\, the goal is to identify all relevant factors\, to prioritize these and make a selection to focus on and subsequently to define the relative priority of these factors. \n(3) Modeling the shift from transactional business models to continuous business models\nWith digitalization\, we are shifting from transactional to continuous business models. This implies complementary services being added to existing products as well as new services being developed based on digital assets. In this workshop\, we look to model this shift and what value factors companies look to achieve and monetize when transitioning towards continuous (service-oriented) value and new revenue streams. In short\, how does one model and design the value of an alternative business model as a basis for decision in the company. \nAs a basis for the workshop\, we introduce all participants to the concept of value design and we detail each step of this technique. The majority of the time is used for a mix of group work and group presentations. The aim is to develop a full hierarchical value model (for each case) as the result of our discussions. \n

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Communicating software metrics
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for the next lunch seminar\, this time organized by the metrics theme\, and project #37: \n“It is no blame game”: How to succeed in communicating software metrics in the organization? \nMeasuring the correct metrics and using it in the right and transparent way can contribute to pushing the development in a desirable direction\, leading to achieving projected goals and outcomes\, effective collaboration\, and improved team performance. On the other hand\, tracking the wrong metrics\, failing to interpret it correctly and to communicate it properly leads to a stressful working environment\, conflicts\, distrust\, lower engagement\, and lower productivity. Effective communication about metrics is vital for creating a shared understanding of metrics’ role\, its use\, and acceptance on different organizational levels. \nThe vision of our project is to understand and improve communication about metrics in contexts of modern software development organizations. We aim at providing insights on and suggestions for enabling effective communication about metrics using different communication channels\, which consequently leads to creating a better understanding of metrics\, contributes to more actionable decisions and increases employee involvement. \nIn our presentation\, we will present some bottlenecks in the process of metrics communication and the strategies for overcoming them. We will also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different channels for transmitting information about metrics. Further\, we will discuss the issues of trust and control in the context of software metrics delivery. \nSpeaker: Nataliya Berbyuk Lindström\, Associate Professor\, Department of Applied IT\, University of Gothenburg \n__________________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nLearn More | Meeting options \n__________________________________________\nSC_LunchSeminars mailing list SC_LunchSeminars@lists.chalmers.sehttps://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_lunchseminars

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Consistent development artifacts
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the next Software Center lunch seminar hosted by theme 2: Consistent development artifacts – a reality check \nSpeaker: Jan Carlson\, Mälardalen University \n \nDevelopment of complex software of high quality can involve a number of artifacts in addition to the produced code\, from requirement documents\, models at architectural and design level to test suits. As development becomes more agile\, these artifacts must be allowed to evolve concurrently\, while still retaining a sufficient level of consistency between them (or at least being aware of inconsistencies). This talk addresses the topic of consistency and synchronization between different development artefacts and how this relates to the push towards shorter development cycles. Different kinds of consistency challenges will be presented\, as well as to what extent existing solutions proposed by academia are suitable in concrete industrial contexts. \nMost welcome to the seminar and please share this invitation with your colleagues! \nAlso\, please note that everyone interested in getting invitation to future lunch seminars can sign up using the following link: https://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_lunchseminars \n\n\n  \n_________________________________________\nMicrosoft Teams-möte\n\n\nJobba på datorn eller mobilappen\nKlicka här för att ansluta till mötet\n\nEller ring in (endast ljud)\n+46 8 505 218 36\,\,915731636#   Sweden\, Stockholm\n\nTelefonkonferens-ID: 915 731 636# \nHitta ett lokalt nummer | Återställ PIN-kod\nLäs mer | Mötesalternativ\n\n\n__________________________________________\n— SC_LunchSeminars mailing list SC_LunchSeminars@lists.chalmers.sehttps://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_lunchseminars

SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar: Generating Exception-Triggering Tests
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Gregory Gay\, Chalmers \nAbstract: Search-based test generation is guided by feedback from one or more fitness functions—scoring functions that judge solution optimality. Choosing informative fitness functions is crucial to meeting the goals of a tester. Unfortunately\, many goals—such as forcing the class-under-test to throw exceptions—do not have a known fitness function formulation. We propose that meeting such goals requires treating fitness function identification as a secondary optimization step. An adaptive algorithm that can vary the selection of fitness functions could adjust its selection throughout the generation process to maximize goal attainment\, based on the current population of test suites. To test this hypothesis\, we have implemented two reinforcement learning algorithms in the EvoSuite framework\, and used these algorithms to dynamically set the fitness functions used during generation. \n We have evaluated our framework\, EvoSuiteFIT\, on a set of 386 real faults. EvoSuiteFIT discovers and retains more exception-triggering input and produces suites that detect a variety of faults missed by the other techniques. The ability to adjust fitness functions allows EvoSuiteFIT to make strategic choices that efficiently produce more effective test suites.

SUMMARY:PdM community workshop: Co-existence of existing and emerging business ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Most welcome to the next PdM community workshop on November 18th. The workshop will be a hybrid event with the opportunity to participate on-site at Lindholmen (building Jupiter\, room 424) or online (Teams link provided below). \nThe topic we address\, and that we invite all of you to contribute to\, is on the ‘co-existence of existing and emerging business ecosystems’. \nIn our experience\, most of the Software Center companies look to complement their existing physical offerings with new digital services or services driven by digital means/assets. Often\, the legacy offerings and the new service offerings address the same customer base and they use the same company resources. This situation can lead to a number of challenges\, e.g.\, starvation of innovation initiatives\, difficulties in reaching customers and shortage of R&D resources. \nIn this workshop\, we invite all of you to share (in a 10 minutes presentation) a specific case where you were looking to have your legacy offering and your new digital offering co-exist – both from a intraorganizational and from a business ecosystem perspective. As the basis for discussion\, we ask each individual company to share their experiences from such a situation by presenting a concrete case where you talk about the context of the case\, the offering(s) itself\, what worked well\, what were challenges you faced and what the strategies were that you used to mitigate these challenges. \nThe workshop is divided in two parts with the first part between 10:30 – 12:00 (me and Jan setting the context and framing the workshop as well as having companies presenting)\, and the second part between 13:00 – 14:30 (any remaining company presentation(s) and time for group discussions\, questions and reflections). With this format\, we aim to provide a venue where all of you can learn from each other and share knowledge. Also\, we share our most recent research on this topic and invite for your feedback on our insights and preliminary findings. \nMost welcome to join us in this workshop and please help us forward the invitation to any colleague who you feel would be interested. We ask each company to present but if there is not the opportunity for you to coordinate with your colleagues we are of course more than happy to welcome more than one presentation from each company. The length of presentations will be adjusted based on the number of companies attending. \nRegards\,\nHelena \n______________________________________________________________\nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nOr call in (audio only) \n+46 8 505 252 11\,\,609786983#   Sweden\, Stockholm \nPhone Conference ID: 609 786 983# \nFind a local number | Reset PIN \nLearn More | Meeting options \n_______________________________________________________________\n— SC_PdM mailing list SC_PdM@lists.chalmers.sehttps://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_pdm

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Why data for AI needs context
DESCRIPTION:Most welcome to the Software Center Brown Bag seminar on November 8th:\n”Setting AI in context: Why data for AI needs context”\nThe seminar is hosted by theme 4 (‘Customer Data and Ecosystem Driven Development’) and we are happy to welcome Hans-Martin Heyn as our speaker. Hans-Martin is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers/University of Gothenburg. \nFor automated driving systems the operational context needs to be known in order to state guarantees on performance and safety. We show\, based on semi-structured interviews\, that major uncertainties exist in how to clearly define and document the operational context in a diverse and distributed development environment such as the automotive industry. This is problematic especially for systems using machine learning\, because data attributes and data quality for training and validation depends on the assumed context of the system. Based on Design Science Research\, we propose a Data Quality Assessment and Maintenance Framework\, to systematically manage data quality and related requirements. \nMost welcome to the seminar and please share this invite with your colleagues! \nAlso\, please note that everyone interested in getting the invites for the Brown Bag seminars can sign up using the following link: https://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_bb \n______________________________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nOr call in (audio only) \n+46 8 505 252 11\,\,335136139#   Sweden\, Stockholm \nPhone Conference ID: 335 136 139# \nFind a local number | Reset PIN \nLearn More | Meeting options \n______________________________________________________ \n— Sc_bb mailing list Sc_bb@lists.chalmers.se https://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_bb

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Improving Machine Learning-based Test Case Selection
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the next Brown bag seminar: Noise Handling for Improving Machine Learning-based Test Case Selection \nThis week\, our doctoral candidate Khaled Al-Sabbagh will present his research about noise selection – which is a preparation for his Licentiate seminar. \nBackground:\nContinuous integration is a modern software engineering practice that promotes for continuously integrating and testing new code changes as soon as they get submitted to the project repository.  One challenge in continuous integration concerns the ability to select a subset of test cases that have the highest probability of revealing faults during each integration cycle. The availability of large amounts of data about code changes and executed test cases in continuous integration systems poses an opportunity to design data-driven approaches that can effectively select test cases for regression testing. \nObjective: The objective of this thesis is to create a method for selecting test cases that have the highest probability of revealing faults in the system\, given new code changes pushed into the code-base. Using  historically committed source code and their respective executed test cases\, we can utilize textual analysis and machine learning to design a method\, called MeBoTS\, that can learn the selection of test cases. \nMethod: To address this objective\, we carried out two design science research cycles and two controlled experiments. A combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods were used\, including testing and code commits data\, surveys\, and a workshop\, to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of MeBoTS in selecting effective test cases. \nResults: The main findings of this thesis are that: 1) using an elimination and a re-labelling strategy for handling class noise in the data increases the performance of MeBoTS from 25% to 84% (F1-score)\, 2) eliminating attribute noise from the training data does not improve the predictive performance of a test selection model (F1-score remains unchanged at 66%)\, and 3) memory management changes in the source code should be tested with performance\, load\, soak\, stress\, volume\, and capacity tests; the algorithmic complexity changes should be tested with the same tests for memory management code changes in addition to maintainability tests. \nConclusion: Our first conclusion is that textual analysis of source code can be effective in test case selection if a class noise handling strategy is applied for curating incorrectly labeled data points in the training data. Secondly\, test orchestrators do not need to handle attribute noise in the data\, since it does not lead to an improvement in the performance of MeBoTS. Finally\, we conclude that the performance of MeBoTS can be improved by instrumenting a tool that automatically associates code changes of specific types to test cases that are in dependency for training. \n__________________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nLearn More | Meeting options \n__________________________________________ \n— Sc_bb mailing list Sc_bb@lists.chalmers.sehttps://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_bb

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: "Macrodebts" in microservices
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to another Software Center lunch seminar\, this time from theme 2:\n“Macrodebts” in microservices: understanding and managing them \nSpeakers: Antonio Martini and Saulo Soares de Toledo \nThe microservices architectural style is increasing in popularity because it helps companies deliver value to their customers fast and continuously. However\, a microservice architecture is prone to costly architectural technical debt (ATD)\, if not timely identified and avoided or removed. The most important ATDs must be prioritized. Still\, there is limited knowledge regarding the identification and prioritization of ATD in companies developing or migrating to microservices. We conducted a set of studies in 10 companies on the identification and management of ATD in microservices. We propose a prioritization strategy by presenting data from experienced companies\, and we measure the benefits and costs of reducing ATD in microservices. Other organizations may use the information shared to help identify and manage ATDs in microservices in their own contexts. \n _____________________________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams-möte \nJobba på datorn eller mobilappen \nKlicka här för att ansluta till mötet \nEller ring in (endast ljud) \n+46 8 505 218 36\,\,342816243#   Sweden\, Stockholm \nTelefonkonferens-ID: 342 816 243# \nHitta ett lokalt nummer | Återställ PIN-kod \nLäs mer | Mötesalternativ

SUMMARY:Design Methods and Processes for ML/DL Models
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Meenu Mary John´s licentiate seminar! \nMeenu defends her licentiate thesis: Design Methods and Processes for ML/DL Models \n\nOpponent: Professor Maria Paasivaara\, LUT University\, Finland\nExaminer: Professor Jan Persson\, Malmö University\nChair of the seminar: Professor Helena Holmström Olsson\n\nAbstract:\nContext: With the advent of Machine Learning (ML) and especially Deep Learning (DL) technology\, companies are increasingly using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in systems\, along with electronics and software. Nevertheless\, the end-to-end process of developing\, deploying and evolving ML and DL models in companies brings some challenges related to the design and scaling of these models. For example\, access to and availability of data is often challenging\, and activities such as collecting\, cleaning\, preprocessing\, and storing data\, as well as training\, deploying and monitoring the model(s) are complex. Regardless of the level of expertise and/or access to data scientists\, companies in all embedded systems domain struggle to build high-performing models due to a lack of established and systematic design methods and processes. \nObjective: The overall objective is to establish systematic and structured design methods and processes for the end-to-end process of developing\, deploying and successfully evolving ML/DL models. \nMethod: To achieve the objective\, we conducted our research in close collaboration with companies in the embedded systems domain using different empirical research methods such as case study\, action research and literature review. \nResults and Conclusions: This research provides six main results: First\, it identifies the activities that companies undertake in parallel to develop\, deploy and evolve ML/DL models\, and the challenges associated with them. Second\, it presents a conceptual framework for the continuous delivery of ML/DL models to accelerate AI-driven business in companies. Third\, it presents a framework based on current literature to accelerate the end-to-end deployment process and advance knowledge on how to integrate\, deploy and operationalize ML/DL models. Fourth\, it develops a generic framework with five architectural alternatives for deploying ML/DL models at the edge. These architectural alternatives range from a centralized architecture that prioritizes (re)training in the cloud to a decentralized architecture that prioritizes (re)training at the edge. Fifth\, it identifies key factors to help companies decide which architecture to choose for deploying ML/DL models. Finally\, it explores how MLOps\, as a practice that brings together data scientist teams and operations\, ensures the continuous delivery and evolution of models. \nLink to DiVA \n————————————————————————————————- \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://mau-se.zoom.us/j/68112512442?pwd=OXhOZ2tRcFZlMWZkRk5mYldzRm8xUT09 \n  \nMeeting ID: 681 1251 2442 \nPasscode: 745700 \n

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Individual test designer performance
DESCRIPTION:Lunch seminar hosted by Theme1:\nIndividual test designer performance – an elephant in the room or an asset for improvement? \nSpeaker: Kristian Sandahl Linköping university \nIt is often heard that the quality of test code suffers compared to production code. A frequent problem is flaky tests\, where it is time consuming to determine the credibility of the test. The underlying assumption of this planned research is that probable causes can depend on the way humans design test cases and that a good part of the problems might have been discovered with static analysis of the test code. Remedies can be sought in identifying training needs\, finding good patterns for test design\, and applying automatic code repair. \nThis research involves acquiring sensitive information\, and I would like to discuss with the audience how this can be handled. I will share some past experience to get us started. \n____________________________________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams-möte: \nKlicka här för att ansluta till mötet \nEller ring in (endast ljud) \n+46 8 505 323 41\,\,856354173#   Sweden\, Stockholm \nTelefonkonferens-ID: 856 354 173# \nHitta ett lokalt nummer | Återställ PIN-kod \n

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: AI-Powered Fault Tolerance in Data Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Software Center brown bag seminar organized by the AI engineering theme. The speaker is Aiswarya Raj\, PhD student at Chalmers. \nAbstract: A large volume of high-quality data is mission-critical for real-world AI applications. Data pipelines consolidate data from disparate sources into one common destination\, enable quick data accessibility\, and ensure consistent data quality\, which is crucial for AI applications. Companies from all domains experience data quality issues and practitioners report that they spend a significant amount of time in data pre-processing. Thus\, validating the quality of data is critical for establishing the trustworthiness of data pipelines\, but is mostly a challenging task of complex real-world applications. State-of-the-practice solutions require explicit domain expertise and are often implemented using a rule-based fault detection system. However\, due to the evolving nature of the data (data drifts)\, it is difficult to anticipate all faults associated with data that may occur in the data pipeline. Therefore\, in this talk\, the main focus will be on employing AI in the data pipeline for the detection of such faults and invoking corresponding mitigation strategies. We use a four-stage model to implement the AI-powered fault-tolerant data pipelines. From a research perspective\, the main benefit of the project is to enable companies to develop a data pipeline that delivers high-quality data products. To companies\, project results will help to reduce the amount of data pre-processing work done by data scientists\, data analysts and other AI practitioners while working with data\, which in turn accelerates the entire AI system development process. \n__________________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nLearn More | Meeting options \n__________________________________________

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Don’t let sample size stop your A/B experiments
DESCRIPTION:Most welcome to the next Software Center Brown Bag seminar which will be hosted by theme 4 (‘Customer Data and Ecosystem Driven Development’) on August 23rd\, 12:00 – 12:30. \nOur presenter is Yuchu Liu who is an industrial PhD student at Volvo Cars. \nPlease find the title and the abstract of the talk below. Also\, attached to this e-mail are two recent papers by Yuchu in which she presents the research that works as the basis for this talk. \nAbstract:\nA/B testing is gaining attention in the automotive sector as a promising tool to measure casual effects from software changes. Different from the web-facing businesses where A/B testing is a well-established practice\, the automotive domain often suffers from limited eligible users to participate in online experiments. To address this shortcoming\, this talk describes how to run A/B testing with small sample sizes. In particular\, the talk presents a method for designing balanced control and treatment groups so that sound conclusions can be drawn from experiments with small sample sizes. Based on case study research with companies in the automotive domain\, the talk identifies the benefits and limitations of the A/B group design method. \n_______________________________________________ \nPlease help us forward this invite to your colleagues if you feel that this talk might be in their interest! \nWe look forward to meet with you at the Brown Bag seminar series in August – and until then we wish all of you a very nice summer! \n  \nRegards\,\nHelena \n_________________________________ \nMicrosoft Teams meeting \nJoin on your computer or mobile app \nClick here to join the meeting \nOr call in (audio only) \n+46 8 505 252 11\,\,876677862#   Sweden\, Stockholm \nPhone Conference ID: 876 677 862# \nFind a local number | Reset PIN \nLearn More | Meeting options \n________________________________________________________________________________ \n— Sc_bb mailing list Sc_bb@lists.chalmers.se https://lists.chalmers.se/mailman/listinfo/sc_bb
