SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Results from a survey about AI and testing
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in software testing\, as evidenced by a recent report from the World Quality Report (WQR) for the year 2019-2020. Typically\, the use of AI in software testing results in a faster\, better\, and more budgeted testing process. Artificial intelligence-based testing\, thus\, provides a strategic framework for software testers to utilize AI and elevate the testing process\, resulting in higher-quality results for companies. AI-based software testing refers to the leverage of AI methods and solutions to automatically optimize a software test process in test strategy selection\, test generation\, test selection and execution\, bug detection and analysis\, and quality prediction. Similarly\, testing AI/ML systems/components refer to diverse testing activities for AI-based software/systems. Well-defined quality validation models\, methods\, techniques\, and tools must be developed and applied for AI-based software to facilitate the test activities to achieve well-defined test requirements and meet adequate testing criteria. \nWe conducted a survey of SC organizations in project 30 to learn about their day-to-day operations in terms of AI for Testing / Testing for AI. \nThe results of the survey and the needs of SC companies will be discussed at this event \nSpeaker: Azeem Ahmad\, LiU

DESCRIPTION:Most welcome to the next Software Center lunch seminar that\, due to a Software Center steering committee meeting and Christmas holidays\, is organized on January 17th\, 2022. \nThe seminar is hosted by theme 4 (‘Customer Data and Ecosystems’) and our speaker Helena H. Olsson\, Malmö University: \n“NOT my job: On the challenges with service innovation and development”\nWith digitalization disrupting industry after industry to an extent that we have only seen the beginnings of\, the business landscape in which the Software Center companies operate is dramatically changing. Key to digital transformation\, and one of the challenges that the Software Center companies face\, is the shift from product-oriented and transactional business models towards continuous and more service-oriented revenue. \nHowever\, service innovation and development brings several challenges to existing organizations and ways-of-working. In our experience\, developing services that go beyond existing sales and that generate entirely new revenue streams prove difficult and involve challenges such as e.g.\, prioritization and validation of ideas\, continuous evaluation with customers\, cross-functional teams that go beyond R&D and the adoption of new ways-of-working. \nIn this presentation\, we present the key challenges that we see the Software Center companies face when developing complementary services to their products. SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Towards Mature Enterprises in AI engineering
DESCRIPTION:The first Software Center lunch seminar of 2022 will be presented by Ivica Crnkovic\, professor at Chalmers and former director of the Chalmers AI Research center (CHAIR). \nTitle: Towards Mature Enterprises in AI engineering – challenges and directions towards possible solutions \nThe hype of AI/ML is getting in his mature phase. A focus from a fascination about endless possibilities and business opportunities and predictions of horror scenarios\, has moved to a better understanding of the real current problems\, costs to solve them\, risk to fail\, and the real new business values. \nSoftware Center was one of the first initiatives in the world taking the questions related how to build AI systems (aka AI-enabled systems) in an industrial context\, identifying AI Engineering – engineering methods\, tools\, and processes focusing on system lifecycles\, that are far beyond development of “the best” AI algorithms. SUMMARY:Value design workshop at Reporting workshop
DESCRIPTION:Value design is concerned with helping companies and teams clarify and agree on what they optimize for. It is a technique for identifying\, prioritizing and aligning metrics at the feature\, system and business level. \nWith A/B testing and feature experimentation becoming critical for continuous improvement of products and services\, companies need techniques that support continuous development and delivery of customer value. \nValue design is a step-by-step technique that help roles and functions at different levels align and that ensure that R&D efforts and resources effectively contribute to overall business goals and visions. \nIn this workshop\, we engage in interactive work and discussions where the participants form groups in which they model the value of a concrete feature. This can be done by forming groups from the same company or forming groups including participants from different companies. The groups are free to select a feature from their own company context or they can use one of three that we offer as fictive cases. However\, the goal is to quantitatively model the factors\, and their relative priority\, that constitute the value of functionality to the customer. \n  \nThe case examples are listed below: \n(1) Online game\nIn online game development\, typical value factors are e.g.\, revenue\, new users\, recurrent users etc. In addition\, companies monitor product performance using metrics such as loading time\, response time\, number of current users as well as user-centered metrics that capture user (gamer) activity and behavior. In this workshop\, we look to model the value of a successful online game from a business\, system performance and/or user perspective with the intent of defining the overall evaluation criteria that can be used in A/B testing. \n(2) Adaptive cruise control\nAdaptive cruise control is a well-known feature that most of us have experience of. In this workshop\, we look to model the value of a successful adaptive cruise control. What are the most important value factors an automotive company should optimize for and continuously improve? In this case\, the goal is to identify all relevant factors\, to prioritize these and make a selection to focus on and subsequently to define the relative priority of these factors. \n(3) Modeling the shift from transactional business models to continuous business models\nWith digitalization\, we are shifting from transactional to continuous business models. This implies complementary services being added to existing products as well as new services being developed based on digital assets. In this workshop\, we look to model this shift and what value factors companies look to achieve and monetize when transitioning towards continuous (service-oriented) value and new revenue streams. In short\, how does one model and design the value of an alternative business model as a basis for decision in the company. \nAs a basis for the workshop\, we introduce all participants to the concept of value design and we detail each step of this technique. The majority of the time is used for a mix of group work and group presentations. The aim is to develop a full hierarchical value model (for each case) as the result of our discussions. \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s time for the next lunch seminar\, this time organized by the metrics theme\, and project #37: \n“It is no blame game”: How to succeed in communicating software metrics in the organization? \nMeasuring the correct metrics and using it in the right and transparent way can contribute to pushing the development in a desirable direction\, leading to achieving projected goals and outcomes\, effective collaboration\, and improved team performance. On the other hand\, tracking the wrong metrics\, failing to interpret it correctly and to communicate it properly leads to a stressful working environment\, conflicts\, distrust\, lower engagement\, and lower productivity. Effective communication about metrics is vital for creating a shared understanding of metrics’ role\, its use\, and acceptance on different organizational levels. \nThe vision of our project is to understand and improve communication about metrics in contexts of modern software development organizations. We aim at providing insights on and suggestions for enabling effective communication about metrics using different communication channels\, which consequently leads to creating a better understanding of metrics\, contributes to more actionable decisions and increases employee involvement. \nIn our presentation\, we will present some bottlenecks in the process of metrics communication and the strategies for overcoming them. SUMMARY:Lunch Seminar: Generating Exception-Triggering Tests
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Gregory Gay\, Chalmers \nAbstract: Search-based test generation is guided by feedback from one or more fitness functions—scoring functions that judge solution optimality. Choosing informative fitness functions is crucial to meeting the goals of a tester. Unfortunately\, many goals—such as forcing the class-under-test to throw exceptions—do not have a known fitness function formulation. We propose that meeting such goals requires treating fitness function identification as a secondary optimization step. An adaptive algorithm that can vary the selection of fitness functions could adjust its selection throughout the generation process to maximize goal attainment\, based on the current population of test suites. To test this hypothesis\, we have implemented two reinforcement learning algorithms in the EvoSuite framework\, and used these algorithms to dynamically set the fitness functions used during generation. \n We have evaluated our framework\, EvoSuiteFIT\, on a set of 386 real faults. EvoSuiteFIT discovers and retains more exception-triggering input and produces suites that detect a variety of faults missed by the other techniques. The ability to adjust fitness functions allows EvoSuiteFIT to make strategic choices that efficiently produce more effective test suites.

SUMMARY:PdM community workshop: Co-existence of existing and emerging business ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Most welcome to the next PdM community workshop on November 18th. The workshop will be a hybrid event with the opportunity to participate on-site at Lindholmen (building Jupiter\, room 424) or online (Teams link provided below). \nThe topic we address\, and that we invite all of you to contribute to\, is on the ‘co-existence of existing and emerging business ecosystems’. \nIn our experience\, most of the Software Center companies look to complement their existing physical offerings with new digital services or services driven by digital means/assets. Often\, the legacy offerings and the new service offerings address the same customer base and they use the same company resources. This situation can lead to a number of challenges\, e.g.\, starvation of innovation initiatives\, difficulties in reaching customers and shortage of R&D resources. \nIn this workshop\, we invite all of you to share (in a 10 minutes presentation) a specific case where you were looking to have your legacy offering and your new digital offering co-exist – both from a intraorganizational and from a business ecosystem perspective. As the basis for discussion\, we ask each individual company to share their experiences from such a situation by presenting a concrete case where you talk about the context of the case\, the offering(s) itself\, what worked well\, what were challenges you faced and what the strategies were that you used to mitigate these challenges. \nThe workshop is divided in two parts with the first part between 10:30 – 12:00 (me and Jan setting the context and framing the workshop as well as having companies presenting)\, and the second part between 13:00 – 14:30 (any remaining company presentation(s) and time for group discussions\, questions and reflections). Hans-Martin is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Chalmers/University of Gothenburg. \nFor automated driving systems the operational context needs to be known in order to state guarantees on performance and safety. We show\, based on semi-structured interviews\, that major uncertainties exist in how to clearly define and document the operational context in a diverse and distributed development environment such as the automotive industry. This is problematic especially for systems using machine learning\, because data attributes and data quality for training and validation depends on the assumed context of the system. SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Improving Machine Learning-based Test Case Selection
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the next Brown bag seminar: Noise Handling for Improving Machine Learning-based Test Case Selection \nThis week\, our doctoral candidate Khaled Al-Sabbagh will present his research about noise selection – which is a preparation for his Licentiate seminar. \nBackground:\nContinuous integration is a modern software engineering practice that promotes for continuously integrating and testing new code changes as soon as they get submitted to the project repository.  One challenge in continuous integration concerns the ability to select a subset of test cases that have the highest probability of revealing faults during each integration cycle. The availability of large amounts of data about code changes and executed test cases in continuous integration systems poses an opportunity to design data-driven approaches that can effectively select test cases for regression testing. \nObjective: The objective of this thesis is to create a method for selecting test cases that have the highest probability of revealing faults in the system\, given new code changes pushed into the code-base. Using  historically committed source code and their respective executed test cases\, we can utilize textual analysis and machine learning to design a method\, called MeBoTS\, that can learn the selection of test cases. \nMethod: To address this objective\, we carried out two design science research cycles and two controlled experiments. A combination of quantitative and qualitative data collection methods were used\, including testing and code commits data\, surveys\, and a workshop\, to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of MeBoTS in selecting effective test cases. \nResults: The main findings of this thesis are that: 1) using an elimination and a re-labelling strategy for handling class noise in the data increases the performance of MeBoTS from 25% to 84% (F1-score)\, 2) eliminating attribute noise from the training data does not improve the predictive performance of a test selection model (F1-score remains unchanged at 66%)\, and 3) memory management changes in the source code should be tested with performance\, load\, soak\, stress\, volume\, and capacity tests; the algorithmic complexity changes should be tested with the same tests for memory management code changes in addition to maintainability tests. \nConclusion: Our first conclusion is that textual analysis of source code can be effective in test case selection if a class noise handling strategy is applied for curating incorrectly labeled data points in the training data. Secondly\, test orchestrators do not need to handle attribute noise in the data\, since it does not lead to an improvement in the performance of MeBoTS. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to another Software Center lunch seminar\, this time from theme 2:\n“Macrodebts” in microservices: understanding and managing them \nSpeakers: Antonio Martini and Saulo Soares de Toledo \nThe microservices architectural style is increasing in popularity because it helps companies deliver value to their customers fast and continuously. However\, a microservice architecture is prone to costly architectural technical debt (ATD)\, if not timely identified and avoided or removed. The most important ATDs must be prioritized. Still\, there is limited knowledge regarding the identification and prioritization of ATD in companies developing or migrating to microservices. We conducted a set of studies in 10 companies on the identification and management of ATD in microservices. We propose a prioritization strategy by presenting data from experienced companies\, and we measure the benefits and costs of reducing ATD in microservices.
