Olsson\, Malmö University. \n  \nTitle: “Bird\, fish or in between: Value modeling as a technique to help you align your business KPIs”\n \nAbstract:\n \nData driven and experimental development practices provide effective means for companies to adopt a customer and market-centric way-of-working. In online companies\, controlled experimentation is the primary technique to measure how customers respond to variants of deployed software. Over the recent years\, and due to increasing connectivity and data collection from products in the field\, these practices are being adopted also in software-intensive embedded systems companies. In these companies\, experiments are run on selected instances of the system or as comparisons of previously computed data to ensure value delivery to customers\, to improve quality and to explore new value propositions. \nHowever\, to utilize the benefits of data-driven and experimental development practices\, companies need to define what value factors to optimize for. What is it really you seek to improve? And how do we ensure that what teams do at a feature level aligns with\, and contributes to\, the overall business goals we seek to achieve? For highly complex embedded systems with thousands of parameters\, and with people at different levels in the organization having different opinions about the value of features\, this has proven to be a very challenging task. \nThis talk presents our research on how value modeling helps identify and align feature\, system and business KPIs in an organization. In addition\, it describes the scope of value modeling and the purposes for which the technique can be effectively used. DESCRIPTION:Title: “There\, but what about Back Again? – Propagating manual modifications from generated code to the design model” \nSpeaker: Robbert Jongeling\, MDH \nAbstract:\nIn one of its forms\, model-based development brings the benefit of complete code generation from design models. The generated code may be subject to manual changes for several reasons\, such as fixing errors after code-level testing\, or adjusting the code for different variants of targeted hardware. As a consequence of these manual changes\, the consistency between the design model and code is likely lost. To ensure the maintainability of the model and code\, this consistency must be restored. In particular\, the manual changes to the generated code must be reflected in the design model too\, i.e.\, the model-code round-trip should be completed. In this talk\, we share our experiences of developing an approach and implementing a prototype solution for completing a model-code round-trip in an industrial setting where code generation is already established. \nLink to the recorded presentations >>

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Optimized Scheduling of Feature-Based Test Execution
DESCRIPTION:As test suites grow larger and more complex\, the time and resources required to execute the test suite also grows accordingly. This is particularly true for companies developing diverse product lines\, who must execute portions of the test suite on compatible hardware units with the features required by those test cases. We have recently begun to explore the topic of how to efficiently parallelize the execution of test cases across a pool of available hardware units. We propose a search-based test scheduling method that attempts to optimize the estimated execution time and utilization of the hardware pool. SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Privacy-aware machine learning method: Federated Learning
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Hongyi Zhang\, PhD student\, Chalmers \nFederated Learning is an improved Machine Learning approach which enables edge devices to collaboratively learn a shared machine learning model. The data exchanged between the edge and central server are no longer user data but the updated model weights. Furthermore\, as this model training method is distributed\, there are chances to make the model become smarter and adapt to their environment. (For example\, devices in Malmö and Stockholm can have slightly different models based on their unique environment.) Due to the rapid increase of data collected on the edge\, it will become more expensive to gather data into a centralized server or cloud. Machine learning with distributed edge training will be the main approach for future AI engineering. This is also why Federated Learning is essential to industries. \nAdvantages of Federated Learning: \n\nPrivacy-Preserving\nNo need to send training data to a cloud or single server\nFast model deployment and evolution\nLow latency and efficient bandwidth utilization\n\nThere is a classic deployment from Google\, where they deployed Federated Learning in Gboard (A Mobile App) to collaboratively train models for improving keyboard query and predicting emoji. \nIn the software center\, we made close collaboration with industries. With Volvo Cars\, we validated Federated Learning in various industrial cases\, such as steering wheel angle prediction\, objective recognition\, etc. We have proved the efficiency of FL and further improved the technique by introducing asynchronous protocols for heterogeneous hardware settings in real-world cases. With Sahlgrenska University Hospital\, we are trying to help them estimate their resource allocation in a distributed manner and investigate the methods to continuously enhance the data privacy and security when applying machine learning in the medical health care field. \nAs the next step of our research\, we would like to investigate the possibility of Federated Learning with various industrial scenarios. We will try to adding autonomously improving mechanism into participated nodes to enhance the model quality and node autonomy. DESCRIPTION:Most welcome to the sprint 20 kick-off workshop for project 5 (‘Accelerating Digitalization Through Data’) and project 9 (‘Strategic Ecosystem Driven R&D Management’). \nIn both projects\, we have had very rewarding collaborations and a number of different research activities related to digital transformation and the implications of this. As two primary topics of interest\, we explored digital business models and data monetization. In addition\, we complemented our work on value modeling of features and products with the topic of business agility. We presented ‘Business Agility 2.0’ and what we see companies need in order to achieve continuous delivery and improvement of value. \nIn addition to the research project activities\, we organized three PdM community workshops on topics closely related to the research projects. In sprint 20\, we plan to continue this workshop series and we will share separate invites for these. \nFor the sprint kick-off\, we plan a two-hour workshop were we present each project and the activities we plan for sprint 20. SUMMARY:Cybersecurity standards and their industry applications – A telecom industry example
DESCRIPTION:The mobile networks are playing a central role in our society by serving close to 8 billion subscriptions worldwide.  These networks are parts of national critical infrastructure in many countries. Security is an important aspect for these networks where a minor interruption may result in major impacts on individuals\, governments\, and organizations.  \nSecurity standards are one of the existing approaches to protect mobile networks and their users through commonly agreed\, tested\, verified\, and updated solutions according to best common practices.  \nNational Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Cyber Security Framework and the ISO 27001 Information Security Standard are two of existing standards having industry-leading approaches to security. \nIn this seminar\, we will go through these two standards and provide a high-level comparison between them\, an overview of how they can be used by vendors\, and an example application to mobile networks \nSpeaker: Shanai Ardi\, Ericsson and PhD student at Linköping university \nThis is an open lunch seminar that is not within any SWC project\, but might be of interest to some of the members.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the last brown-bag seminar of 2020! \nTitle: Exploring the cognitive processes used by testers \nAbstract: In theme one Eduard Paul Enoiu from Mälardalen University has been working towards a cognitive model of software testing based on how problem solving is conceptualized in cognitive psychology. This approach instantiates a general problem solving process for the specific problem of creating test cases in automated testing. A preliminary study led to a pilot experiment to understand the mechanisms by which human testers choose\, design\, implement and evaluate test cases and test design strategies. With such a model comes the opportunity to improve training and support of testing. One example of improvement\, observed in previous sprints\, is to augment human-created test suites with other automated test generation strategies (e.g.\, combinatorial coverage). \nEduard will be teaching in a course in Romania on Monday\, but will make a video that we can have as a basis for the discussion. \nThe link to the video is https://youtu.be/7FPXOSsgrMM

SUMMARY:Lunch seminar: Towards Continuous Delivery of ML/DL Systems
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly popular within companies across domains due to the success of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) technologies. For companies across domains\, the end-to-end process of developing\, deploying and successfully adopting ML/DL models in operation introduces several challenges related to the design\, the evolution and the scaling of these models. For example\, access and availability of data is often challenging and activities such as data collection\, data cleaning\, data pre-processing\, data storing\, as well as uploading\, training\, deployment\, and placement of model(s) in operation is complex. This is true particularly for large\, complex\, highly regulated and safety-critical embedded systems in areas such as e.g.\, telecom\, automotive\, defence\, security\, healthcare etc.  As part of the research\, we conduct studies covering the end-to-end process of ML/DL model development\, as well as in-depth studies focusing on the specifics of the deployment phase and how to operationalize these models in large-scale embedded systems\, and how to continuously deliver and evolve Machine Learning Systems (MLOps) to improve the key quality attributes of the larger system of which these are part. \nBio:  Meenu Mary John is a PhD candidate at Malmö University. Academic background in Computer Science and professional experience in the software industry. She conducts research in Data- and Al-driven Development. The intension is to enable and advance not only expert data scientists\, but also to encourage less-experienced data scientists\, software engineers and even non-experts to effectively approach the design and evolution of ML/DL models in today’s embedded systems industry where the shortage of highly skilled data scientists is a fact. DESCRIPTION:This lunch  seminar is hosted by Software Center Theme 4: ‘Customer Data and Ecosystem Driven Development’. Our speaker is Helena H. Olsson from Malmö University. \nTowards Business Agility 2.0\nBusiness agility is critical for companies across domains. It involves the ability to quickly respond to market dynamics and to emerging technologies. While business agility has predominantly been associated with the software industry it is rapidly becoming key for companies in the embedded systems industry. However\, while business agility refers the speed with which an organization can respond to changes\, the adoption of agile practices is fundamentally different in embedded systems companies compared to companies in the software industry. For embedded systems companies\, business agility requires all parts of the system to be agile\, including traditional technologies such as mechanics and electronics as well as digital technologies such as software\, data and AI. Hence\, agility means different things for the different technologies involved in an embedded system. Moreover\, while traditional technologies have so far been monetized using transactional business models\, digital technologies allow for continuous business models in which frequent improvements of system functionality makes systems improve throughout their economic life. The short development cycles of Agile development\, and in particular continuous integration\, are sometimes seen as conflicting with the apparent longer development phases in model-based development. We study how software development can benefit from combining these two paradigms successfully into continuous model-based development.\nIn this licentiate thesis\, we present four papers studying continuous model-based development of complex embedded systems in industry. The first two papers present investigations of the current state-of-the-art and state-of-practice of combining model-based development and continuous integration. In particular\, specific challenges to the combination are identified. In the third and fourth papers\, we focus on one of those challenges: model synchronization\, i.e.\, the management of consistency between disparate development artifacts describing the same system or parts of it. We propose a lightweight approach that notifies developers of arisen inconsistency between different models. Lastly\, we consider the aspect of variability among different development artifacts. DESCRIPTION:Title: Multi-factor Approach for Flaky Test Detection and Automated Root Cause Analysis \nSpeaker: Azeem Ahmad\, Linköping University \nAbstract:  Re-running test cases is the most popular and adopted approach to detect flaky test in large scale industries. Re-running is costly because it consumes a lot of computing power. Google uses 2-16% of its testing budget just to re-run flaky tests. Re-running is unreliable because it is hard to determine the number of re-runs to find discrepancy in output. We developed\, implemented and evaluated multi-factor approach to detect flaky test without re-running. The contributed factors are (1) number of test smells in the test cases\, (2) whether test case failed after executing on the corresponding change in production code\, (3) test case history\, and (4) test case size. The machine learning algorithm is implemented to find relationships between the contributed factors and the possibility of test flakiness. Once the build is failed\, our tool can determine whether the failed test case is a real failure or flaky.

For companies\, there are a number of ways in which to exploit data: \n\nData is used to generate benefits within the organization and within the scope of the company\nData is shared with others to generate benefits that are non-monetary but instead indirectly monetizable and related to e.g. risk\, warranty etc.\nData is sold with monetary reimbursement\n\nFocus:\nIn this workshop\, we explore how the participating companies create and exploit value out of the data they collect from products in the field in (1) monetary and/or non-monetary ways and for (2)interorganizational use and/or external use. The data can be both historical data and real-time data and in aggregated and/or non-aggregated form. \nFormat:\nThe workshop is organized as a hybrid workshop with the opportunity to call in using Microsoft Teams (link in the end of this invite) or to participate in-person at Lindholmen in Gothenburg (if you would want to participate in-person please let us know in advance). In the workshop\, we provide an introduction of the topic as well as selected research findings before we invite the participating companies to share experience and expertise on the topics mentioned above.
