SUMMARY:Product Management in the Age of Digitalization

DESCRIPTION:Meeting for product managers\, focusing on the implications of digitalization. \nThe meeting is part of the Software Center reporting workshop. \n  \nTime:           13.30-15.30 \nPlace:           Ericsson\, Lindholmen\, Gothenburg \nAddress:      Lindholmspiren 11\, Gothenburg \n  \nRegister at this link:\nhttps://goo.gl/forms/1tF0VLn8kiKCA3kj2 \n  \nCurrent observations of many of the companies that I spend time with have led to my prediction that most of these companies will be disrupted and killed by digitalization. If you are interested in avoiding that fate\, my recommendations are fourfold: \n\nGet software expertise in your senior leadership and board as soon as possible and listen. The world is changing rapidly and all your experience\, collected over the last decades\, is a liability rather than an asset.\nPreparing for the future does not happen just by saying it. Put systems in place that ensure that sufficient resources are allocated into exploring opportunities created by digitalization and make sure that the success metrics are different from the mature legacy businesses.\nInvolve all functions in the company in the work around digitalization and embrace the uncertainty that comes with radical innovations.\nFocus on your fringe customers and experiment with these customers at the edges of your business around new opportunities and innovations enabled by digitalization.\n\n  \nMost companies will be killed by the digitalization transformation and the odds are stacked against most companies. However\, it’s still better to go down fighting than as a victim and\, who knows\, you might come out victorious! \n  \nRead more: \nhttps://janbosch.com/blog/index.php/2018/05/17/why-digitalization-will-kill-your-company-too/ \n  \nJan Bosch and Malin Rosqvist will host this meeting during the Software Center reporting workshop.

SUMMARY:PhD Thesis Defence - Aleksander Fabijan
DESCRIPTION:Defense date: June 15th 2018\, 1PM \nDefense room: NI:B0E07\, Malmö University  \nThesis Title \nData-Driven Software Development at Large Scale \nAbstract \nAccurately learning what customers value is critical for the success of every company. Despite the extensive research on identifying customer preferences\, only a handful of software companies succeed in becoming data-driven at a scale that they aim for. Benefiting from novel approaches such as experimentation on top of the traditional feedback collection is very challenging\, yet tremendously impactful when performed correctly. \nIn this thesis\, we explore how software companies evolve from data collectors with ad-hoc benefits\, to trustworthy data-driven decision makers at scale. We base our work on a 3.5 year longitudinal multiple-case study research with companies working in both embedded systems domain (e.g. engineering connected vehicles\, surveillance services) as well as in the online domain (e.g. developing search engines\, mobile applications). \nThe contribution of this thesis is twofold. First\, we present how software companies learn from customers. Second\, we show how they adopt and evolve experimentation in order to improve their data-driven capabilities. \nWith our work\, we wish to empower software companies to become data-driven at scale by using the experience of companies that succeeded in this. Ultimately this should lead to better software products and services. \nAleksander Fabijan
