Background:
Software ecosystem research has traditionally focused on platforms, interfaces and complementors, assuming relatively stable artifacts and periodic value delivery. However, the classical “software ecosystem” (e.g., APIs, plugins, platforms) is no longer the dominant organizing unit. What we see emerging is new ecosystem logics where data and models become the primary scarce, valuable and contested resources.
The shift we are about to experience is where contemporary digital systems increasingly operate as hybrid ecosystems in which software, data, and AI models co-evolve through continuous learning loops. In such ecosystems, system behaviour changes at runtime, value emerges over time rather than at release points and competitive advantage compounds through learning rather than feature accumulation.
In a hybrid ecosystem, value is created through the continuous co-evolution of software, data, and AI models. In these ecosystems:

Changed behaviour produces new data

The loop never stabilizes
This is not an ecosystem with feedback – it is a feedback system.
In this workshop, we explore the transition towards hybrid ecosystems and we discuss the implications of this on the Software Center companies. Especially, we focus on how value creation in hybrid ecosystems depends on the intentional design of data and AI-driven learning loops.
